LOMFic - Arachnophobia

Title:
Arachnophobia

Author: DorsetGirl

Fandom: Life on Mars

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their universe. BBC/Kudos do. I’m not making any money out of this.

Rating:  White Cortina; no actual spiders appear in this fic.

Pairings: Sam/Gene implied

Word Count:  238

Summary: Sam is scared of spiders

A/N: In a comment on [info]walkerbaby’s fic His Irrational Fear[info]ilovedoyle said  “you've made me want a ficlet where Sam makes a fool of himself by revealing his arachnaphobia to Gene at work”. I’d promised myself a day of being sensible today and tackling various RL issues, so obviously I had to respond to this instead.

 Arachnophobia

Tyler was acting very strange this morning, Gene decided.

Normally the thought of doing a little collating would bring on that involuntary flicker of the eyelids, the sharp intake of breath, and the smile so satisfied you almost checked his trousers for come stains.

Not today, apparently.

Yes, the involuntary flicker, yes yes the sharp intake of breath, but today no satisfied smile, just a widening of the eyes, quickly controlled, and was that fear at the corners of the perfect lips?

“Something wrong, Tyler? Only I thought you’d be in there by now, humping files about, rubbing dust off folders, getting the index nailed.”

“Want you to come with me”

“What?”

“Want you to come with me”

“Would love to, Sam. Been a while since we did some filing together. I could just go for a bit of discussing what order things should go in, pushing things about until they fit properly. Not today though, Gladys. Meeting Jackie Queen for lunch.”

“Bring her too.”

“I thought you just said...”

“Bring her too.”

“I didn’t know you went for the angular Scottish type, Tyler. I thought soft and round was more your style in women. Strong, though, I’ll give you that. Not many women can hold down the Ge... I didn’t say that, OK? I did not say that.”

“Is she scared of spiders?”

“What?”

“Is she scared of spiders?”

“Shouldn’t think so, Gladys, no. Why, are you?”

Hahaha! Do you do that too? *g* I fail just as spectacularly *g*

Poor Sam. Let's hope Ray doesn't get to hear of Sam's phobia - he would certainly take advantage of it!

I love all Gene's double entendres. I bet he was chuckling to himself at them :D

Do you do that too?

All the time, I'm afraid. This took ten minutes to write, ten minutes to stop LJ changing the font sizes and forty minutes to stop it chucking in extra line feeds and swallowing the title. I nearly just binned it instead.

Ray would be one of those bastards who likes to pick up the really big, hairy-legged black spiders and hold it right up to your face. (I'm glad you liked the double ententres; I wanted to think up something a little more subtle for the second lot, but the mind failed.) Thanks for commenting.

I take it you liked it then? This is only about the third thing I've ever written to a prompt, so I was quite pleased to get something out of it, although it did feel like a cheat what with there being no actual spiders!
