Doctor Who
I don't go looking for spoilers, so at the end of "The Name of the Doctor" I'm sitting here going "Whaaat? The fuck?". And the kids are just, "Whatever".

I just - well, I thought I'd read that Matt was definitely going to be around for the 50th Anniversary episode, and now we suddenly have a different Doctor?

But on the bright side, I heard Chris, briefly: "Absolutely fantastic." Still love that man, so much.

I definitely enjoyed this episode more than some. There was tension; there was emotion; there even time given over specifically to emotion, which is something Moffat can't normally be arsed with. I just wish I hadn't already read that Chris won't be coming back for the anniversary special and that all the previous doctors weren't even contacted, which is fucking rude when you think about it. I just don't get what's so bloody special about Tennant that he's the only past Doctor in the anniversary special.

Matt's signed up for the next series. (I assumed Hurt was maybe an earlier regeneration we don't know about? like, pre-Hartnell? don't know though).

I thought it was a great episode! I guess maybe they'll use footage of the earlier doctors in the anniversary special like they did in this one? it would be great for the ones still going to be involved, but they all look so different now it would be a bit odd.

Yes, now that I've gone looking that's what people seem to be saying, and I saw a photo of him in what looked faintly like Nine's leather jacket (although when I saw it for real it looked more black than it used to on screen). I think that's a great idea and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it. But if they could have done it without Ten I'd have been a lot happier.

I think you're right about using old footage rather than actual ageing actors, but I can totally see why they're pissed off not to have even been contacted. I think they should have arranged some kind of get-together on set for all the surviving Doctors and companions; it surely can't hurt to keep those people happy and I bet the papers would bite their hands off for the photos.

I enjoyed the episode more than some, but I would like to see a return to when the companion wasn't there simply to serve the story and the Doctor. With Rose, Martha and Donna, even Micky and Rory, we saw that travelling with the Doctor changed them, improved them. They gained from it; it wasn't all about revolving around the Doctor as River, Amy and Clara seem to.

It totally made my night!

Ten was such a huge success - with everybody except me, it seems - that he has completely eclipsed Nine and that makes me very sad, because Nine will always be "my" Doctor. If I ever get a working DVD player I'm going to treat myself to a rewatch of his series, along with wine and cake and a lot of tissues.

I liked Ten well enough, but Nine was the one who caught me into the New Who and I'm not sure any of the versions since would have drawn me in so completely on their own.

I do want to see that series again. And some of the older Who, which I've still never seen.

I couldn't agree more! I never felt Ten had any depth to him, and his displaying of emotions was so ticky-box - big eyes, check, sudden gruff voice, check - that he irritated me quite a lot of the time.
