Amazon Fail
I've signed a petition here

This is what I said:

Amazon UK has for a long time been my first, automatic choice for everything from books, CDs and DVDs to electronics and computer accessories. Now I realise that someone at Amazon US thinks they know better than I do what is "decent" or "acceptable" for me to look at.

I know the States is a little behind in these matters, but here in the UK homosexuals have full legal equality. It therefore seems to me that to selectively suppress LGBT material on the feeble excuse that it is "adult" material is against UK law. To equate "homosexual" with "adult, ie too sexually explicit", is to state that it is unacceptable for persons under eighteen to learn about homosexuality.

Come on, Amazon, you really can't get away with that. I won't be ordering anything else from Amazon until I hear some progress on this issue. And I'm sure you realise that once people have found acceptable alternatives they don't come back.

By the way, I'm a boring, middle-aged housewife who identifies as 99% straight.

Wow. That's just - wow.

I can't believe they think this is acceptable,to differentiate between explicit heterosexual and homosexual/lesbian material like this. WTF?!

*whips off to sign petition*

And they can go whistle if they think I'm ordering anything from them until this is sorted out. Gah.

This is when I have a problem with huge corporations like this; when they start to think they're able to dictate like this to their buying public.

*is frowning*

Ah, your WTF icon - I've missed that.

There are updates coming out, but I don't particularly believe them. I'll have another look tomorrow.

*looks around* Wait...what?

I've had friends who are 15 buy explicit gay porn from people (pictures included). Amazon needs to stop being anal.

Turns out the "glitch" wasn't strictly US based, it was global.

Yes, I've just been reading about how some French employee "mistakenly" marked all LGBT-related tags as pornographic, and that automatically goes world-wide.

Not sure I believe that though, because apart from anything else, there must surely be some differences in what is classified as porn in different countries. If UK/US have to have the same classifications as, let's say, Australia or Pakistan, then we are going to find our choices narrower than our own laws allow for.

Besides, for this guy to have the system privilege to make such wide-reaching changes without someone checking it suggests to me either he was quite senior or Amazon are stupid. And they wouldn't be where they are in the market if they were stupid.

Besides, this explanation doesn't fit with the fact that this has apparently been happening gradually over the past few months.
