A/N: I do have a number of other stories for Survival, so this isn’t the last of the series. But I think it might be the ending.

It was always going to be difficult getting over it, they’d both known that from the start.
You couldn’t keep a man in such conditions for three weeks without it leaving marks. A man left alone in dark and dreadful pain, denied all human comfort day after long lonely day would not, could not, be the same man when he was brought out into the light.
These past few months they had both been to hell and back, and the journey wasn’t over yet. Sam still cried out in the night when the dreams were bad; Gene still felt cold terror each time the phone rang and Sam wasn’t there. Some days they wondered if they could get through it without losing everything they were.
Since Sam had come back, separately and together they’d faced down the demons threatening their future; they’d concentrated on survival and they’d come out still fighting. But their relationship had changed, and there were difficult areas where neither dared go just yet. They’d caused each other untold pain, and that guilt had yet to be faced.

Gene got out of bed and stood at the window, watching the sky lighten far away. These quiet moments when the world slept were his refuge, and each day as he waited for the kettle to boil, he allowed himself to remember how things used to be.
It had been so beautiful, before. The two of them together, murmuring in the dark. Slow, gentle movements; skin, fingers, tongues touching and meeting, hearts combining and passion rising as they fought for dominance and gasped for breath; sometimes one on top, sometimes the other, or neither. It hadn’t mattered to them - “any way up is fine as long as it’s with you” had always been Gene’s credo.
Soft words from a hard man, and afterwards, hand in loving hand they would lie close and warm, breathing quietly together as they slept.

Now Gene climbed carefully back into bed with his cup of tea and drank it slowly as he watched Sam sleep. Last night had been particularly bad, and Sam hadn’t settled until 4 o’clock. Now as the sun came up he turned towards Gene, still asleep, and his face was sweet and calm.
Gene reached out and stroked his hair gently, savouring these last moments before the day began.
It had been so beautiful.
It would be again.
