I clearly hadn't thought this through...
My OH and I are going to see Green Day tomorrow night (YAY!!!), and because the seats we have aren't very good, I've found someone on a fan forum who has some better ones for sale. I've made the arrangements by PM and text, and now my OH is going to meet the guy this afternoon to collect the tickets.

Only problem is, the guy knows me as DorsetGirl and my OH, er, doesn't. Ohhh ... shit. My OH knows nothing about online life in general, and certainly not mine in particular, and he really doesn't get the whole "screen name" / online persona thing AT ALL. (When he asked me on the phone what the guy's name was, I told him and said "that's just his screen name, I have no idea if it's his real name" and there was this stunned silence.)

Then I was waiting for OH to ask what my screen name was. I now realise, of course, that he has NO IDEA that I even have a screen name.

Like I said, Ohhh ... shit.

On the same level as when my OH was reading a Sam/Gene fic of mine, which on the face of it was entirely innocent (OH whilst broadminded doesn't believe in Sam/Gene slash). All well and good, except the first line of the first comment says that they're clearly shagging! (oops)

Oh, that's given me a great laugh, thank you! I can only hope that as my OH as never even heard of LJ that he won't actually track me down...

Still, he doesn't know anything about browser history either, so at least if he goes on the computer I know afterwards what he's been doing. And I'm fairly sure he's never heard of slash - just as well, really, as he's a self-confessed homophobe. He is well aware that I won't tolerate any kind of anti-gay comments in front of the kids, and if he does start mocking Graham Norton or whoever I always defuse it and remind them it's just ordinary, OK, nothing to get excited about. I always think - what if one of them is gay? I want them to know I wouldn't have any problems with the idea.

Hope you enjoy the concert and hopefully the OH won't ask too many questions. I can see why you'd be so freaked because I like my online life to be separate from real life.

I'm hoping I've got away with it; he's just phoned to say he's got the tickets, and he didn't say anything. I texted his name and number to the guy, so hopefully the conversation just went "Hi, are you X?" "You're Y, yeah?" and then down to business. I shall find out later, I suppose!

Happened across your entry after loving your life on mars fic (I feel compelled to explain why I'm looking at a stranger's journal, even though that is the nature of livejournal!) and you addressed an issue I've been wondering about... the whole OH and LOM fandom existing separately thing. My husband noticed that I was reading Firefly slash fic when I was rabid about that, and made some mild comment about it, but I'm actually very close to being moved to write some LOM slash, and I don't know if I will tell him or not.

Clearly the answer for some people is "not". And that's cool! I kinda want a support group for making this decision!

*g* I know, it feels a bit odd sometimes, doesn't it, but I normally have at least a quick look at the journal of anyone new I see around lifein1973. I always feel it would be a lot worse if no-one came to read.

I hope you do write some LOM slash! It's always great to have new people coming in to balance out those who are moving on. I have a number of reasons for keeping quiet about my online life, including the fact that as a "stay-at-home-mum" I need something and somewhere that is mine. Also I'm not convinced that He Who Goes Out To Earn The Money would see perving over slash a valid use of (far too much of) my time!

I love that it is possible to have actual conversation with people who are similarly obsessed with this show (or any other thing) thanks to the wonder that is the internet. I understand feeling the need to keep the online life to yourself; I've just been curious about the issue since apparently (at least according to online articles) the majority of slash fans and writers are heterosexual women, and the majority (perhaps) of men are not comfortable with that sort of thing... it follows that either a lot of women keep their slash to themselves, or a lot of OHs are tolerant.

Since both my OH and I go out and earn money, and share time on the computer at home, it's a little more complicated.

P.S. I've become quite a Anglophile over the last 8 years or so (visited in 2002, have since been obsessed with Dr. Who and LOM) and enjoy having the opportunity to rub virtual shoulders with people who live there.

P.P.S. I WILL write some LOM slash - got 3-4 stories somewhat started in my head. Just gotta find the time to type. And learn how to post.
